Jabber – Pidgin Client Configuration Instructions for Microsoft Windows
The following are the instructions for setting up a MS Windows computer to connect to the IT Services test/pilot Jabber Instant Messaging server for the purposes of Group Chat for the IEC (Zimbra) calendar migration effort. Pidgin is an IM client that supports the
- Jabber XMPP protocol
- SSL encryption on the network
- Kerberos authentication

Authentication
First you need to make sure you have Kerberos Configuration Tool installed or otherwise have a Kerberos ticket to authenticate. Most IT Services users already have this active.
Getting the Pidgin Client Software
Go to this site to download and install Pidgin for MS Windows.
Configuring Pidgin to work with SUNetID, SSL and Kerberos
After you’ve installed Pidgin, you need to add a Jabber account. To do this, launch Pidgin and go to
Accounts > Manage Accounts

You will then get a Accounts window
Click the Add… button

At the Add Account window, go to the Protocol pull down menu and select XMPP (which is synonymous with Jabber).

When the Add Account window comes up, put your SUNetID into the Username field.
Then in the Domain field, type ” itlab-im.stanford.edu “.
Do not put your password into the Password field.
In the same window, select the Advanced button (to the right of the Basic button).

Check the box to Require SSL/TLS. Then click the Add button at the bottom of the screen.
Next, back on the Buddy List window, select
Buddies > Join a Chat…

You will then see the Join a Chat window. Enter ” calendar-mig ” into the Room field.

Now simply click the Join button at the bottom of the screen and you will get a Chat room window for the IEC calendar migration support team.
