Jabber – Adium Client Configuration Instructions for Mac OS X
The following are the instructions for setting up a Mac to connect to the IT Services test/pilot Jabber Instant Messaging server for the purposes of Group Chat for the IEC (Zimbra) calendar migration effort. Adium is an IM client that supports the
- Jabber XMPP protocol
- SSL encryption on the network
- Kerberos authentication
Authentication
First you need to make sure you have Kerberos Configuration Tool installed or otherwise have a Kerberos ticket to authenticate. Most IT Services users already have this active.
Getting the Adium Client Software
Go to this site to download and install Adium for Mac OS X.
Configuring Adium to work with SUNetID, SSL and Kerberos
After you’ve installed Adium, you need to add a Jabber account. To do this, launch Adium and go to
File > Add Account > Jabber

When the Edit Account window comes up, put your SUNetID into the Jabber ID field. Do not put your password into the Password field. In the same window, select the Options button (to the right of the Account button).

Once you are in Options, you should type “itlab-im.stanford.edu” into the Connect Server field. The Resource field will fill in your hostname and you should not have to modify it. Make sure the Require SSL/TLS box it checked.

Now click OK at the bottom of the Window.
You will see a certificate warning since this is just a test server. Just click Continue to accept this warning for the purposes of this pilot. You should now be logged into the Jabber IM test server.
Joining Group Chat in iChat
In Adium, go to File > Join Group Chat…

When the Join Chat window appears, make sure you see your SUNetID selected in the Account pulldown menu.

In the Chat Room Name, type ” calendar-mig “. Then click the Join button. This should open a window for you into the group Chat Room for the IEC calendar migration support team. You will see who is currently logged into the Chat Room and some of the text in that room.
